This year's Legendary Slam Team won first place in both the team and individual divisions in Albuquerque last month at the 2018 Southwest Shootout Regional Championships. Competing against teams from across the southwestern United States, team members Mycah Miller, Risa Mykland, Raggedy Andey, Fortino Vazquez-Hernandez Jr., Zoe Willats, and Jordan Wilson (coached by Kevin Holmes and Jasmine Schlafke) were proud to represent Santa Cruz’s blossoming poetry scene.
Raggedy Andey also won the individual poetry competition, which ran concurrently with the team division over the weekend. The poets qualified for the team by competing in a series of local slams over the winter, and have been working together for the last four months on group pieces and performance, practicing against other Bay Area teams.
Celebrating their season and victory with a feature at last week's Word Church, the scoreboards have been wiped. Thus, in future slams, beginning with this month's slam on August 27th, competing poets can begin racking up points to qualify for next year's slam team, which has it's sights set on the National Poetry Slam in Oakland in the Fall.
